CPC is an essential requirement for anyone applying for a Goods Vehicle Operator's Licence or for staff with responsibility for the control of goods vehicles.

The Road Haulage industry has three types of Operators' licence:

1. Standard National Licence additionally allows an operator to carry goods for other people for hire or reward in the UK. (National CPC required)

2. Standard International Licence additionally allows an operator to carry goods for hire or reward on international journeys. (International CPC required)

3. Restricted Licence allows an operator to carry goods in the course of his own trade or business in the UK or abroad. (No CPC holder is required - but background knowledge is essential to meet O' Licence requirements.)

The regulations state that an operator who seeks a standard National or International Licence MUST satisfy the Licensing Authority that he/she is either professionally competent or employs someone as a transport manager who is professionally competent and is of good repute by passing the examinations for the Certificates of Professional Competence (CPC) conducted by OCR Examinations. The examination is administered by OCR on behalf of the Department for Transport.

The examination for a National CPC consists of three modules (with a further module to cover International Operations). All three (or four if also taking the International exam) are set on the same day.

To gain your CPC you must pass the relevant CPC examinations. They are conducted four times per year at approved OCR examination centre's. Novadata is an approved OCR examination centre.

The OCR examination for the National Freight syllabus consists of Modules 1 and 2 (multi-choice questions) and Module 4 (case study).

The OCR examination for the International Freight syllabus consists of Modules 1 and 2 (multi-choice questions) and Module 4 (case study)and Module 6 (short response questions and a case study).
